How to apply?
Indian visas can be issued to U.S. citizens in a few different ways, including on arrival at select airports in India (you’ll need an e-visa) and by applying ahead of time with an application agency that works with Indian consulates. Because visa requirements vary based on your individual circumstances, it’s best to apply with an application agency that has experience working with U.S. citizens (they know what documents you’ll need to bring and have dealt with American clients before). We recommend using Blue Dart Immigration Consultants or another application agency; either will provide you guidance through your application process from start to finish. What is your eligibility?
Indian Visa Application is in two categories one is on your own or as self-employed and the other as a family member of a non-resident Indian (NRI). Your eligibility will be verified by the Ministry of Home Affairs and you need to submit all details about your permanent residence address, employment status, and marital status. If your eligibility certificate does not match your age then you will not be eligible for an Indian visa. They have devised some strict rules from 2017 where if you are planning to apply under the self-employment category then you should have proof of regular income without any gap of 2 years at least.
Which visa category should you choose?
Indian visas are categorized into six different types of visas. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for more than one type of visa. However, not every foreigner is allowed to apply and be issued a visa. Below are six categories that will hopefully help you figure out which category best suits your circumstances.
Where do you have to apply?
Most foreign nationals, must apply at their local Indian consulate or embassy. You can find a list of Indian consulates and embassies on India’s official website. Those who live outside of India should plan ahead; if possible, try and schedule an appointment at least one month prior to departure from India.
Where do I get my medical done?
You will need to get a medical test done in order to apply for an Indian visa, but where do you find a place that gives them? Your local Indian embassy or consulate is likely your best bet. They can advise you on what documents you need, along with ordering and paying for your tests. You can also search online or ask around; most doctors who provide these services make arrangements with embassies so they know exactly how much money to expect before they agree to test anyone. Keep in mind that if you’re applying through an agency, they may take care of all of these arrangements before sending you off to have your test taken.
